Baby Gorillas Rescued from Poachers

This is a really sad story that I read when I woke up this morning.  I feel that it's really important to remember the impact humans have on other animals, and it seems like so many people don't realize that what they do can have serious consequences on local populations of wildlife in Africa.  Two baby gorillas (4-months and 9-months) were rescued from poachers in the eastern Congo.  Unfortunately, when only babies are found, that typically means the adults in the area "have been killed trying to protect the infant."  It really makes me angry that these poor babies might be the only ones left, and even then, they may not survive.  To the left is a picture of one of the baby gorillas' caretakers.  Each night, a caretaker sleeps with them.

If you want to read more about the little guys, click here to see both the article and get access to a website for the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the gorillas are being kept.

  1. First off, this picture is adorable! And secondly, as tragic as it is, it's uplifting in a way to realize that the parents of these two gorillas sacrificed their own lives in order to protect and save their young ones. I wish it was easier to go out an save these gorillas and prevent people from poaching because its killing off so many amazing animals.

  2. That reuly is such a sad story, it brings me back to my article on the elephants. Such a sad aspect that these babies aremorphaned due to the need of gorillas as "game". These caretakers can only providenso much, and I do hope there is a story in the future
