Food Insecurity Is Connected To HIV Cases

This article was really surprising to me the first time I read it, but as I have learned about African history, it's not that unusual in times of food scarcity.

Right now, Africa is going through two epidemics that are drastically affecting each other.  If you have food insecurity, you might sell your body to gain access to food.  In gaining access to food through sex, you may contract HIV from your "benefactor."  If you contract HIV and then AIDS, you are too sick to go out and either buy or grow food.  If you are too sick to access food, you get even sicker and eventually die.

I'm very saddened to hear that this is such a problem, when we take food for granted in so many countries.  We sometimes don't realize how easy it is to get food, even when you're sick, in our country versus other countries.  In Africa, this ease is rarely found and is now contributing to a worldwide problem: AIDS.

  1. I don't know what disturbs me more, the lack of access to food or the fact that people sell themselves to eat.
